In the sleepy seaside town of Surfside, California, Nancy and Walter Katin started a small boat cover business in the summer of 1954. The canvas boat covers on the Katin were thought to be bulletproof since they withstood extensive testing and used waxed-nylon thread and nickel grommets. Locals quickly looked for different applications for Katin's products after noticing the durable canvas covers.
One of California's first pair of surf trunks was the pair of bespoke trunks Walter produced for Corky. Young surfers flocked to the shop in droves to purchase a pair as soon as word of the trunks' durability spread. Walter, who was overwhelmed by the demand, turned to a talented local seamstress named Sato Hughes for assistance.
